Energize Des Moines

Energize Des Moines is a voluntary program to reduce energy use (electric, gas, and water) in Des Moines’ largest buildings (above 25,000 square feet). If your building is less than 25,000 feet you are still welcome to participate. 

The goal is to reduce usage by 10% by 2020.  Buildings larger than 25,000 square feet will be eligible for awards and public recognition.

How do i participate?
  1. Read Benchmarking Defined.
  2. Read Exploring Benchmarking in Des Moines Iowa.
  3. Read Program Summary and Program Design to understand the challenge criteria, categories and timelines.
  4. If your building has multiple electrc meters, read Whole-building Usage Aggregation Request FAQ to understand MidAmerican Energy policy.
  5. Based on the number of memeters and accounts in a building please download the documents for MdAmerican Energy including the blank spreadsheet.  Complete the information and send all forms to
  6. If your building has multiple water meters read and complete the Account Aggregation Request Form - Des Moines Water Works; and download and complete the Energize Des Moines Aggregated Accounts Spreadsheet DMWW.  Send the completed forms to .
  7. Enter at least 13 months of data in Energy STAR Portfolio Manager to generate Energy STAR score to share with EPA and City of Des Moines via Energy STAR Portfolio Manager.  If your building is not eligible for Energy STAR score, we will use total energy/water use and energy/water use intensity. 
  8. Complete the Energize Des Moines Participant Form by 3/31/2018.
