Engineering Mission
The mission of the Engineering Department is to construct public infrastructure and maintain traffic control systems essential to the safety, health, mobility, and quality of life for Des Moines' citizens, business, and guests.
Responsibilities of the Engineering Department
The Engineering Department is responsible to provide the following services:
Design and manage construction projects for streets, bridges, sewers, buildings, parks, and other infrastructure.
Construction field services such as inspection, testing, and survey for public and subdivision work.
Construction contract administration including bidding of projects along with Federal and State Grant compliance.
Real estate acquisition, relocation services, and city owned property disposition.
Operate and maintain traffic signals, street signs, street lights and pavement markings.
Operate and maintain parking garages, parking lots, parking meters, and issue parking permits.
Permitting activities in the streets and boarder areas such as utility installation, drive accesses, encroachments,
sidewalk construction, oversize/overweight permits, house moving permits, and taxi and limo licensing.
Provide technical support to Des Moines Metropolitan Wastewater Reclamation Authority (WRA)
