Grand Avenue over Walnut Creek Bridge Replacement
The Grand Avenue Bridge over Walnut Creek (east of 63rd Street) is open to vehicular traffic. The project replaced the original bridge which was built in 1914, with a new 165ft. x 86ft. continuous concrete slab bridge. Construction work has resumed on the project. The major items of work to remain are trail grading and construction, retaining wall construction, approach sidewalk construction, railing and fence installation, and final site restoration and seeding. There will be periodic lane closures to complete the remaining work, so motorists should use caution when driving in this area, obey all construction zone signing, and expect possible delays.
Currently, the Walnut Creek Recreational Trail beneath the bridge is closed and there is no on-site detour available. The signed trail detour route has been posted using Waterbury Circle, 56th Street, and North Valley Drive. It is anticipated that the trail will be closed for approximately 2 months.

The Principal Riverwalk features lighted, landscaped public spaces, world-class public art, and unique pedestrian bridges and pathways that connect 300 miles of Central Iowa trails. The project was a gift to the City of Des Moines in honor of the 125th anniversary of the Principal Financial Group.
Since ground was broken in 2004, we’ve been working to strengthen the heart of our city, unite the east and west sides of downtown, and provide opportunities for outdoor recreation.
