  • Park Avenue will be closed at the railroad tracks east of SW 56th Street beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, September 8, 2014, through Monday, September 22, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. The street closure is necessary for railroad crossing improvement.

    Detours will be signed:

    Northbound: Fleur Drive, Grand Avenue, 63rd Street
    Southbound: Fleur Drive, Army Post Road, Highway 28/63rd Street

    Motorists are urged to use caution when driving in this area and obey all construction zone signing.

    E 5th Street from E Grand Avenue to E Locust Street

  • Urbandale Avenue from Beaver Avenue east for a distance of 300’ will be closed to traffic beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2014. The closure is necessary for improvements related to the Beaver Avenue Streetscape project. The street is expected to be closed for approximately 1 month.

    A detour will be signed using 30th Street, Hickman Road, and Beaver Avenue.

    Motorists are urged to use caution when driving in this area and obey all construction zone signing.

  • 41st Street from Forest Avenue to Beaver Avenue will be closed to all traffic between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, for resurfacing as part of the 2014-2015 Street Resurfacing Program.

    In case of inclement weather, the work will be done on the following day or when weather permits.

    Motorists are urged to use caution when driving in this area and obey all construction zone signing.

  • Watrous Avenue from South Union Street to SW 7th Street will be closed to through traffic between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily from Tuesday, September 2, 2014, through Friday, September 5, 2013 for milling, patching and clean up.

    On Monday, September 8, 2014, this section of roadway will be closed to all traffic between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. for resurfacing as part of the 2014-2015 Street Resurfacing Program.

    Motorists are urged to use caution when driving in this area and obey all construction zone signing.

  • Indianola Avenue from E McKinley Avenue to E Porter Avenue
  • Starting: 08/27/2014 09:00 AM 
  • Ending: 09/26/2014 05:00 PM
     
  • Indianola Avenue from E McKinley Avenue to E Porter Avenue will be closed to traffic beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, August 25, 2014 for construction activities related to the Indianola Avenue Widening Phase 3 project. The intersection of E McKinley Avenue and Indianola Avenue will be reopened at this time. The intersection of Easter Lake Drive and Indianola Avenue will be closed. Access to Ewing Park will be available using the intersection of Indianola Avenue and E McKinley Avenue. This closure will be in effect through Friday, September 26, 2014. The entire project is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2014.

    A detour route will be posted using SE 14th Street and Army Post Road. Motorists are urged to use caution when driving in this area and obey all construction zone signing.

  • LANE CLOSURE: SW 9th Street between McKinley Avenue and Porter Avenue
  • Starting: 07/07/2014 09:00 AM 
  • Ending: 11/03/2014 12:00 AM
     
  • SW 9th Street between McKinley Avenue and Porter Avenue will be reduced to one-lane traffic in each direction beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2014. This restriction is necessary for the City’s contractor to begin the widening project on SW 9th Street in this area.

    The project will add a center left turn lane on SW 9th Street. Construction is expected to be completed late this year.

    Motorists are urged to use caution when driving in this area and obey all construction zone signing.

  • East Euclid Avenue Bridge Over Four-Mile Creek
  • Starting: 04/14/2014 09:00 AM 
  • Ending: 09/14/2014 05:00 PM
     
  • This morning, the East Euclid Avenue Bridge over Four-Mile Creek (east of E. 33rd St.) was closed at approximately 9:00 a.m. for Iowa DOT bridge construction work. The bridge will be closed for approximately 5 months.

    This closure is necessary for the Iowa DOT’s contractor to replace the existing bridge with a new structure.

    A detour will be posted using E. 33rd Street and Hubbell Avenue. Westbound trucks will detour using Hubbell Ave., Easton Blvd., and I-235. Motorists are urged to use caution when driving in this area, and should obey all construction zone signing.

  • NOW OPEN: South Union Bridge over Yeader Creek
  • Starting: 04/02/2014 09:00 AM 
  • Ending: 09/02/2014 05:00 PM
     
  • The South Union Bridge over Yeader Creek (south of McKinley Avenue) will by open to traffic by 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2014.

    This closure was necessary for the city’s contractor to replace the bridge deck and complete major rehabilitation work on the structure.

  • SE 18th Street from E Market Street to Scott Avenue
  • Starting: 04/01/2014 09:00 AM 
  • Ending: 09/05/2014 05:00 PM
     
  • SE 18th Street from E Market Street to Scott Avenue will be closed beginning at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014 for road reconstruction as part of the Southeast Connector project. This closure will be in effect for approximately five months.

    Detour routes will be posted along E Market Street, SE 20th Street, and Scott Street. All businesses on SE 18th Street will be open and have vehicular access.

  • Younkers Building Fire--Downtown Closures
  • Starting: 03/29/2014 12:00 AM 
  • Ending: 09/30/2014 12:00 AM
     
  • 8th Street from Mulberry to Locust and Walnut Street between 8th and 9th are now open to traffic.

    Walnut Street between 6th Street and 8th Street and 7th Street between Locust and Mulberry remain closed to traffic. These closures are necessary for the activities related to the Younkers Building Fire which occurred on Saturday March 29th. These roads will remain closed until further notice.

    Access to the Financial Center Parking Ramp on 7th Street can be gained from Mulberry. No access will be granted to the Partnership Building Parking Ramp. Those monthly parkers are still temporarily relocated. Skywalks also remain closed in the vicinity of the Younkers Building.

    Motorists are urged to use caution when driving in this area and obey all road closure signing.

  • TRAFFIC LANE CHANGES: Hubbell Avenue from Easton Boulevard to East 33rd Street

  • Hubbell Avenue from Easton Boulevard to East 33rd Street will be restriped to a 3-lane roadway (one lane in each direction along with a center turning lane) this weekend. The work will be done on Saturday and Sunday, August 3 and 4, 2013.

    Motorists are urged to use caution when driving in this area and obey all construction zone signing. If weather conditions do not allow this painting, it will be rescheduled at a later date.

  • Robert D. Ray Drive north of Des Moines Street will be closed beginning at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013 for reconstruction and expansion of the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, formerly called the Botanical Center. Access from East 6th Street will no longer be allowed. Access to the Botanical Garden parking lot will remain via Robert D. Ray Drive from Grand Avenue on the south end of the Botanical Garden.
