Housing Service’s mission is to provide quality affordable housing opportunities within Des Moines and Polk County, and to facilitate, where possible, self-sufficiency for its clients.
Housing Services Responsibilities
Des Moines Municipal Housing Agency (DMMHA):
The DMMHA provides Public Housing rental units for low-income qualified families and administers the Section 8 rental assistance program for the County of Polk. These programs are funded by the U.S. Department of Housing And Urban Development (HUD) and administered by the Des Moines Municipal Housing Agency (DMMHA), Housing Services Board and Municipal Housing Governing Board (Des Moines City Council).

Housing Services Board
The Housing Services Board initiates programs or projects, including grant applications that further the policies and plans of the Municipal Housing Agency including tenant conduct and relations; interact with other governmental agencies with respect to application for and implementation of grants and other funding programs; reviews and comments on Housing Services Director's annual operating and capital budgets prior to their submission to City Manager; buy, lease, sell or exchange supplies, equipment and materials; and procures service or work to extend to unencumbered funds available when such contracts or agreements exceed $10,000.
