Community Action Program
Des Moines Community Action Agency is charged with providing services to the City's low-income families and trying to address and eliminate causes of poverty. The City became a public Community Action Agency (CAA) in 1977.
The beginnings of Community Action can be found in the signing of the federal Equal Opportunity Act in 1964. There are now 1,000 Community Action Agencies in the U.S. The City of Des Moines is one of eighteen Community Action Agencies serving Iowa.
Today the proven grassroots techniques originated in Community Action are used by many other organizations and agencies to initiate change.
 Low-Income Assistance Programs
Des Moines Community Action Agency works with low-income residents within Des Moines corporate city limits to provide crisis assistance and provide tools to help low-income residents gain personal and economic self-sufficiency. Unless otherwise specified, low-income programs are available to households with annual gross incomes at or below 150% of federal poverty guidelines. List of Low-Income Assistance Program
