Public Housing Information
Eligibility

Eligibility for the Public Housing assistance programs is determined by family composition, arrest history, past participation in federally subsidized programs, rental history, and income guidelines determined by HUD for Des Moines.

Eligible applicants for these units must be at least 18 years of age, be a single person, a disabled person, a person 62 years of age or older or a married couple or an elderly or disabled family or a non-disabled/elderly family of no more than four persons.  NOTE:  Maximum of four persons per household.

Additional eligibility requirements are as follows:

• One member of the household must be a U.S. citizen or non-citizen with eligible status

• Applicants for the Public Housing Program must be age 18 to be eligible to apply

• Must meet income eligibility requirements as established by HUD

• Must successfully pass screening criteria which includes, but is not limited to: no negative past participation in Federally subsidized programs, acceptable arrest history, acceptable rental history, and

• Does not owe any money to a federally subsidized housing program.

Automatic Denial

DMMHA WILL DENY an applicant for the Public Housing Program if they have any drug related charges on their arrest record within the past five years.
 

Income Guidelines

The maximum income for residents and applicants of the five manors is $42,300 for a one person household and $48,350 for two person households. To be determined eligible to participate in Public Housing 5(h) Affordable Homeownership Program, your total household income may not exceed the following limits.

Application Process

For manor housing fill out the Public Housing Application and return to Housing Services Department located in Suite 101 of Park Fair Mall, 100 E Euclid Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50313.   A Public Housing Packet contains information on the five manors, an application, and instructions for filling out the application.  The packet is available online or can be obtained from the Housing Services department.

The Leasing Division of the DMMHA handles the application process for Public Housing assistance programs. When a Public Housing eligible applicant's name comes to the top of the waiting list, the applicant is offered a rental unit. Upon acceptance of a unit, a participant must enter into a lease agreement with the DMMHA and pay approximately 30% of their monthly adjusted gross income for rent.
