Aquatics and Water Sports

The Aquatic Centers and Swimming Pools are closed for the season. The facilities will be back up and running in the summer of 2019. Be sure to stay up-to-date on the happenings within the Parks and Recreation Department by visiting this page and by following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Season Swim Passes

Season swim passes can be purchased ONLINE beginning April 1 and throughout the summer season. During the month of April, you can purchase your season passes at the Early Bird rates.

Scholarship Information: Formerly known as “Experience Greater Des Moines” the GRASP card is your ticket to reduced costs for Season Swim Passes, Swim Lessons, as well as other Park and Recreation programs and community activities and programs. Income guidelines do apply.

Swim Lessons

Each summer we have 5 sessions for swim lessons. During those sessions we offer Baby/Infant and Me, Preschool Swim, Learn to Swim Levels 1-5, Adult Swimming Lessons (Session 2 and 3 only) and Private Swimming Lessons, as well as certification classes for Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training. 

Swim Lesson registration, Lifeguard Training and Water Safety Instructor registration are only available online.

What Level Should I Sign Up For? 

Private Swim Lessons:                         June 18-21; June 25-28;                             July 9-12; July 16-19; July 23-26

Lifeguard Training:  If you are given a conditional offer of employment with us you may be eligible to recieve the Lifeguard Training course at no charge.  The Lifeguard Training link and job posting provide detailed information.

Water Safety Instructor:  If you are hired to teach swim lessons for us you may be eligible to recieve a reimbursement of the Water Safety Instructor fee.  The Water Safety Instructor link and job posting provide detailed information.

Private Party Rentals

Let us host your next birthday or pool party at one of our aquatic facilities. Fees for private rentals are as follows:

You can reserve a pool facility ONLINE beginning April 1. Payment is due at the time of your online booking request.

Rental requests must be made online at least 10 days prior to the date of facility use.  All facilities are available for private rental June 9-August 4.

Ashworth, Birdland and Nahas may be rented before and after open swim times until 10:00pm.

Northwest and Teachout may be rented before and after open swim times until 9:00pm from June 9-July 31.  And until 8:30pm August 1-4.

Des Moines Parks and Recreation operates five major aqatic facilities, primarily between Memorial Day and Labor Day Weekends. This includes two historic facilities including Ashworth Pool (opening in 1926) and Birdland Pool (opening in 1936). 

All General Rules and Regulations apply during private rentals.
