Sailing Introduction

Have you ever wanted to learn to sail or captain your own sailing vessel? This is the beginning of your sailing journey as you learn some terminology, the basics of sailing, and get a chance to try sailing in a safe and fun environment under the guidance of a US Sailing Certified Instructor. Monday night gives basic info and use of sailboat with instructor; Tues/Wed - free use of sailboat for practice; Thurs - an instructor is available to answer any questions. Lifejackets included. Registration deadline for each session is 1 week prior to start date. Students will get wet during class so please dress accordingly; bring a towel and change of clothes. Note: Classes are for adults; teen students are allowed with a parent also registering for class.

Canoe Solo Basics

Both a “Canoeing Basics I” and a “Canoeing Basics II” class are required to take this class. Instruction occurs at Gray’s Lake and will focus on the strokes and skills required to solo an open canoe on flat water creeks and rivers. Equipment is provided. Minimum age is 16, and a participant must be able to swim. Dress to get wet (a change of clothes is optional). Pre-registration is required at least 72 hours in advance.

Japanese: Tanabata Star Festival

Japan America Society of Iowa is teaming up with the Iowa Bonsai Association and the Raccon Valley Kendo Club to offer an evening of Japanese culture, through our own local "Tanabata: Japanese Star Festival"
They will have their own Taiko drums at the event to do a short performance and offer a workshop to anyone interested. The Kendo club will also have a demonstration and workshop to teach how to swing a Bamboo Sword. The Bonsai Association will bring their Bonsai Trees displays and teach anyone the art of cutting Bonsai. And of course, they will still have origami and bamboo branches to hang written wishes
