Moon Float May 29

Gray’s Lake boats are rented out on the night of the full moon each month during the summer. Participants have the opportunity to float on Gray’s Lake under the stars and listen to the calming sounds of the night. Rentals are offered 8:30 – 11 p.m. and are $6 per boat per half hour.

Free Fishing Friday

Free fishing weekend in Iowa is a perfect time for beginners to get introduced to the sport. A license is not required for the weekend and we will be providing bait and supplies for those who don't have any. This activity is free and open to the public.

CarpFEST

Try your hand at carp fishing and you might win a prize. The Iowa DNR and Izzak Walton League are partnering with Des Moines Parks and Recreation for this event. If you are new to Carp fishing, we will have bait and gear on hand and instructions to get you started. Carp caught may be kept by the fisherman or donated onsite to the wildlife rehabilitation organization S.O.A.R. No fee and all ages welcome.

These programs are designed to introduce and expose the participants to sufficient skills and knowledge, so that they can enjoy the sport of Stand Up Paddleboarding in a flat water setting. Topics that will be covered in the course include launching, board control and different paddling strokes. Registration includes equipment and instructions

Upcycle Stewards Volunteer Event

Location: Gray's Lake Park

Join the community helping remove invasive species from our woodlands. Removing these invaders opens the woodland floor allowing native plants with deeper root systems to re-establish. Native plants hold the soils in place, provide habitat and act as filters improving our water quality. Invasive plants such as honeysuckle are UPCYCLE’d after they are removed and given to the Blank Park Zoo for food and fun for their animals.

Free Flicks is a summer-long series of outdoor movies shown throughout Des Moines sponsored by UnityPoint Health - Des Moines. This week's movie is "Ghostbusters."

Movies begin after sunset and are shown on our 25-foot inflatable screen. Guests are welcome to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and movie snacks as no concessions are available.

Movies will not take place in the event of rain.

Des Moines Parks and Recreation along with the Iowa DNR are offering a Stand Up Paddleboard basic skills course at Grays Lake on July 14th. This course is designed to introduce and expose the participants to sufficient skills and knowledge, so that they can enjoy the sport of Stand Up Paddleboarding in a flat water setting. Topics that will be covered in the course include launching, board control, different paddling strokes, rescue and more. Registration is $25 and includes all the equipment and instructions.
