A "Canoeing Basics I" class is required to take this class. This class briefly revisits the fundamentals of canoeing basics, and then adds more paddling stokes and in-water rescue techniques. Equipment is provided. Dress in swimsuits, shorts, or other suitable clothing for getting wet. Minimum age is 10. A participant who is 10-15 years of age must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years of age for his/her canoeing partner. Pre-registration is required at least 72 hours in advance.

Carp Fest

Des Moines Parks and Recreation is partnering with the Des Moines Izaak Walton League to bring you Carp Fest 2015. Registration for this free carp fishing tournament begins at 8:00 am with fishing from 9:00 to 11:30 am. There will be a prize for the longest carp caught in both the adult and children’s age category. Instructions, bait and fishing gear will be available. A valid fishing license is required for the event. Carp caught may be kept by the fisherman or donated onsite to the wildlife rehabilitation organization S.O.A.R.

Moon Float

Take a relaxing float under the stars and listen to the sounds of the night.
All non-gas powered boats are welcome to join us. If you don't have a boat, the Gray's Lake concession stand offers rentals of canoes, hydro bikes and paddleboats on a first-come, first-served basis. You can also grab a delicious snack from the concession stand to enjoy as you float. Mark your calendar for full moon floats on June 2, July 2, and August 14.
Rental of Boats - $5 per half hour. Lights are provided free of charge with rental boats. Participating boats must have a flashlight.

Free Fishing Weekend Event

Yoga in the Park

Des Moines Parks and Recreation and UnityPoint Health - Des Moines invite you to enjoy your Saturday mornings by participating in a free weekly yoga session at Gray's Lake this summer. Maximize your stress relief by practicing yoga on the southeast lawn.

The class will be from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. and will be held every Saturday beginning June 6 through September 26.

Local volunteer instructors lead each session, which means you’ll have a different yoga experience each week! You are encouraged to bring a mat or a towel as well as some water and clothes you can move in. No registration for the class is required, just show up ready to relax, release and enjoy.

Get in touch with the world around you through activities like fishing, geocaching, printmaking, observational drawings, pond and water quality research, ecology, fort-building, hiking, tree identification, species documentation, outdoor cooking, nature investigation and MORE! iEARTH is a partnership between the Science Center of Iowa and Des Moines Park and Recreation.

Come learn from outdoor enthusiasts, art teachers and environmental specialists. Have a blast with fun and safe supervised activities. On rainy days, we'll be indoors or take a field trip, but please come rain or shine and dress for the weather!

Camps for Grades 5-8 will be based from Gray's Lake. Bring a lunch each day and meet at the terrace above the concession stand. In addition to nature activities, this group will go swimming, biking and canoeing. A schedule with additional details will be sent to you before camp begins.

For grades 5 and up, be sure to bring your bike each day. Biking camps will ride around Gray's Lake as well as along the Bill Riley Bike Trail between Gray's Lake and Greenwood Park. Experiment, learn and play along supervised trails and bike paths. You must be a confident rider with your own functioning bicycle, helmet and padlock. Bike maintenance and trail safety training will be provided on the first day of camp.

We also will be canoeing for at least part of every day as long as weather permits. The canoeing portion of camp will be taught by certified ACA Canoe Instructors. If your child has a lifejacket that will work for canoeing, please send it with them to camp. Initial instruction will occur in lakes and ponds with the final canoe trip taking place on the Raccoon River. Additional details regarding that trip will be sent to you before camp begins.

River Canoeing Outing

A "Canoeing Basics I" class is recommended to take this Outing. Some instruction occurs on the river, but the outing is intended to be leisurely and apply previously learned paddling skills. Depending upon water levels, this river trip will be on a local moving flat water river or creek (TBA). Equipment is provided. Dress to get wet (a change of dry clothes is optional). Minimum age is 10. A participant who is 10-15 years of age must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years of age for his/her canoeing partner. All river trips meet at Gray's Lake at 8:00am the day of the event, and may be cancelled or rescheduled by the instructor via phone/email notification (approx. 24-48 hours prior) due to water levels, weather conditions, etc. Pre-Registration required at least 72 hours in advance.

Join the Des Moines Environmental Educator for an evening paddle on Gray's Lake to learn more about the history of the lake, how it functions and the wildlife that live there. Starting at 5:30 we will paddle in search for wildlife that live in and around the lake and discuss what we find along the way. There will be two different session to choose from, July 7th and September 10th. Registration for this event is limited to 10 spaces and includes the stand-up board and gear.
