Earth Day Trash Bash 2017
Volunteers are needed for Iowa's largest Earth Day cleanup event on Friday, April 21. Last year, we had 1565 volunteers remove over 40,000 pounds of litter, brush, tires and recyclables while beautifying our public lands, cleaning up our waterways, clearing away invasive species, creating new trails and more. Join the effort this year!

Park Madness 2017
Park Madness voting is now open! Click below to help move your park through to the finals in this bracket-style tournament. The winning park will host a Free Flicks movie later this summer. Voting ends Sunday, April 2 when the “Park Madness” champion is crowned.
Mayor's Annual Ride and Run
This annual fundraiser benefitting the trail system, starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 15 with the 5k Walk/Fun Run, followed by a 25-mile recreational Bike Ride. Register prior to April 15 for just $30 or pay $40 the day of the event at the Richard A. Clark Municipal Center. For an additional $5, participants can enter both events. Children 5-18 are $5.
New Youth Volleyball Program!
Des Moines Parks and Recreation is excited to partner with Des Moines Public Schools to offer a new program, youth volleyball! Open to children grades 1-7. Registration is $50 per person or $475 per team, with jersey included and ends May 7. Volunteer coaches will be offered a free coaching clinic at the beginning of the season.
Exciting Changes are Coming to MacRae Park!
Starting Monday, March 6 through the end of summer, the upper MacRae Park shelter will be under renovation. A portion of the MacRae Park road will be also closed to the public. Access to the park is available from Davis Avenue. When the renovation is complete, the section of the park road that was closed will be rebuilt. The reconstruction process will last until early fall.
Carousel of Colors Egg Hunt!
Des Moines Parks and Recreation is hosting “Carousel of Colors” egg hunts on Saturday, April 8 at 10 a.m., at Union Park. Open to children 10 and under, separate areas are available for ages 6 and under and 3 and under to search. No registration is necessary, this program is FREE and only children are allowed to hunt. This program happens rain or shine.
Spring and Summer Softball!
Grab your teammates and sign up today for our Spring and Summer Softball Leagues. Des Moines Parks and Recreation offers a variety of leagues for both men and coed teams. For more information about each league and to sign up online click the link below.
Still Time to Register
If you are 16 years old and a proficient swimmer, become an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. This course will help you teach skills that may save a life, gain terrific work experience as an aquatics professional and earn money while you help people learn valuable skills. Cost is $175 per person.
Lifeguard Training Offered!
Register today to become lifeguard certified! Participants will be trained with the knowledge and skills to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Must have the ability to swim 300 yards. Participants are expected to have classroom and in water participation every day. Registration is $100 per person.
New Annual Report Available
Des Moines Parks and Recreation is pleased to provide residents with the “2016 Report to the Community.” This report provides a high level overview of many of the department’s significant accomplishments over the past year.
Get to know the birds that stop by Gray’s Lake Park as they pass by on their journey north. The lunch time sessions are free and perfect for all ages. Participants will meet from 11:00-11:45 am at Gray’s Lake every Wednesday starting March 1st and continuing through May 31st.
