Starting
in Waukee and ending in Jefferson, the Raccoon River Valley
Trail travels 56 miles, highlighting some of the history
and natural features in the area along the way. It passes
through what used to be the town of Ortonville, which was
the winter housing site for the Orton Circus. In Adel, a
side trip from the trail offers views of the historic French
Tudor Court House surrounded by brick streets. Throughout
its route, native prairie patches within the corridor provide
glimpses of Dallas County as it looked before settlement.
The trail also crosses the North Raccoon River in Adel and
travels along the Middle Raccoon River just north of Redfield.
Interpretive signs along the trail explain natural and historic
sites.
Note:
There is a $2/day or $10/yr charge for a pass to use the
Raccoon River Valley Trail. These passes are available at
all trailheads along the trail. There is no charge to use
the trail within cities along the trail. |
