Airport Unit

The Airport Unit was formed in response to the 9/11 tragedy. It provides 24-hour police presence and security for the traveling public, citizens, and employees of the Des Moines International Airport and its’ airlines.

This unit is the primary law enforcement organization at the Des Moines International Airport. Officers are responsible for assisting security screening personnel, enforcing criminal statutes and city ordinances, traffic regulations (including cab and limousine ordinances), and answering any police-related calls for service on airport property. All areas of the airport are patrolled by uniformed police officers.

The Airport Unit cooperates with, and functions jointly with, other governmental agencies including:

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

Transportation Security Administration (TSA – formerly the FAA)

U.S. Customs

Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS)

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)

Alcohol, Tobacco, & Firearms (ATF)

U.S. Postal Inspectors
