  • Medal Of Valor Recipients

    Officers Robin Swank, Collin Boone, Aaron Cawthorne, Jeremy Sprague, Reserve Office John Carter and Sergeant Michael McTaggart were awarded the Department's highest award for their extraordinary actions when responding to a fiery car crash on August 28th, 2011.

  • Cheryl Fridl Retires

    Cheryl Fridl retire last week after 23 years of service with the Police Department. Cheryl was a real go-getter and worked many assignments at the PD. She's an avid biker and exercise enthusiast and she's not done working yet! She starts a new job one week after her retirement. Congratulations and thanks for your service!

    Det. Scott Anderson and Cadet Toua Lor retired last week . Anderson served the department 32 yrs. He was recognized as the Rotary Club Officer of the Year in 2011. Toua served 30 yrs. as a Police Cadet. Congratulations and thanks for your service!

  • Honorary Police Chaplain

    Rev. H.I. Thomas was awarded an Honorary Police Chaplain's badge on April 4th at the Police Museum. Chief Bradshaw praised him for his service to the community and as an advocate of civil rights. Police recruitments are conducted by the Des Moines Police Academy.  To be considered for the next police recruitment please request a notification from the City of Des Moines’ Human Resources department. To sign up for notifications you may fill out a notification form located at the Human Resources Department, first floor of City Hall, 400 Robert D Ray Drive, Des Moines, Iowa or fill out a interest card online.


Please note: The home or email address must be current in order for the potential candidate to receive the notification.
Members of the Personnel staff are responsible for recruiting. The staff works closely with the City's Human Resources Department to attend job fairs, organize recruiting forums, and actively recruit minority applicants.

Reserve Officers

 

The Des Moines Police Department is continually looking for reserve officer candidates who possess good character and integrity. These candidates should be able to exercise initiative in their work, have the ability to accept responsibility and handle difficult situations alone. They must have the mental capacity to learn a wide variety of subjects quickly and correctly, the desire and ability to adapt thinking to technological and sociological changes in today’s world and the emotional and maturity, physical strength and endurance to remain calm in emotionally charged situations. The candidates must possess the social skills and abilities that would enable them to communicate effectively with persons of various cultural, economic and ethnic backgrounds. The candidate should have a strong desire to help people and to contribute to the well being of the communities of Des Moines.
