  • Run With Police on Saturday May 16th

    Join us for the First Annual Run With Police on Saturday May 16th, 10AM starting in the 100 blk. Of E. Court Avenue right outside of the Des Moines Police Station, and finishing back at the station. This is a timed 5K race/run/walk event which benefits Special Olympics of Iowa and also recognizes National Police Week.

Police recruitments are conducted by the Des Moines Police Academy.  To be considered for the next police recruitment please request a notification from the City of Des Moines’ Human Resources department. To sign up for notifications you may fill out a notification form located at the Human Resources Department, first floor of City Hall, 400 Robert D Ray Drive, Des Moines, Iowa or fill out a interest card online.

Members of the Personnel staff are responsible for recruiting. The staff works closely with the City's Human Resources Department to attend job fairs, organize recruiting forums, and actively recruit minority applicants.

The Des Moines Police Department is continually looking for reserve officer candidates who possess good character and integrity. These candidates should be able to exercise initiative in their work, have the ability to accept responsibility and handle difficult situations alone. They must have the mental capacity to learn a wide variety of subjects quickly and correctly, the desire and ability to adapt thinking to technological and sociological changes in today’s world and the emotional and maturity, physical strength and endurance to remain calm in emotionally charged situations. The candidates must possess the social skills and abilities that would enable them to communicate effectively with persons of various cultural, economic and ethnic backgrounds. The candidate should have a strong desire to help people and to contribute to the well being of the communities of Des Moines.
