Purchasing Police Records
Public records may be requested by filling out an Application for Public Records. This form along with the fee may be submitted in person to the Records Section located on the 1st floor of the Des Moines Police Department, 25 East 1st Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50309, from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, seven days a week, or by mail to the attention of the Records Section at the address above. If you have questions, please call the Records Section at (515) 283-4896.
Many items can be processed the same day the request is received. However, audio recordings and photos may take three to five days to process.

Online Access to Traffic Accident/Crash Reports
The Des Moines Police Department set a goal to provide citizens and insurance companies with the ability to obtain accurate and affordable traffic accident/crash reports as quickly as possible. To accomplish this we have now made traffic accident/crash reports available anytime through the Internet. Docview LLC has been chosen by the Des Moines Police Department to service on-line requests for accident reports.
www.docview.us.com charges a nominal convenience fee for this service which is added to the cost of the report. Citizens that do not wish to pay the convenience fee can still come to the police station and pay only the cost of the report.
Residents that choose to purchase copies of accident reports through Docview simply go to www.docview.us.com and click on the Private Citizen Purchase Crash Report tab at the top of the page. Select the State of Iowa and then the Des Moines Police Department. Complete the requested information and hit submit. If you are unable to find a report that you believe should be in our records, fill out any additional information pertaining to the report. The staff at Docview LLC will contact you as soon as possible to assist you in locating the report.
If you are affiliated with an agency that requests multiple reports, you may set up an account for billing purposes. To request an account with Docview LLC, simply go to www.docview.us.com and click on the Request an Account link located at the top of the page. Complete the account request form and submit it. Docview will notify you by e-mail when your account as been activated and is ready for use.

Fingerprinting
The Identification Section does fingerprinting from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, except on recognized federal or city holidays. The Identification Section is located on the 2nd floor of the Des Moines Police Department, 25 East 1st Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50309.
Prior to arriving at the Police Station
• The agency or person requesting you be fingerprinted should supply you with cards; we provide no cards for this service.
• Cost is $10 per card, paid by cash or check only. No credit or debit cards are accepted.
• You must bring a valid, non-expired government-issued picture ID with you; we will not fingerprint anyone without proper ID.
• This service is provided first-come, first-served; no appointments are taken. However, rarely is the wait more than five minutes.

This website allows the public to see crimes that have been reported in the city within a few days of their occurrence. Only crimes occurring within City of Des Moines boundaries are displayed. Our crime mapping records are updated daily to ensure the most current information is available to the community. Users can choose which crime types they would like to view for a period of up to 90 days. I understand that the data represented on this site is for informational purposes only.
