Garbage & Yard Waste

The City of Des Moines Department of Public Works, Sanitation Collection Division provides garbage service to Des Moines residents.  You can find information about our garbage service below or feel free to contact our 24-hour Customer Service Center at (515) 283-4950.  You may also contact Public Works by using our convenient Online Garbage and Yard Waste Request Form.  

Garbage Collection Day

 

What time should I put my Garbage out?
  • All collection carts should be placed curbside by 7:00 am and no earlier than 5:00 pm the day before scheduled collection. 
Start Garbage Service 
  • Garbage collection is initiated when you contact the Des Moines Water Works at 515-283-8700 to set up your water service. 
  • Garbage carts are assigned to each property and should be on site upon move in. (This excludes New Construction)

 

Handicap/Disabled Non-Curbside Collection Services

The City of Des Moines provides Non Curbside Collection services for Solid Waste, Recycle and Yard Waste collection to those individuals who are physically unable to place their solid waste at the curb or alley for regular collection.

  • Eligibility Requirements for this program:
    • A physicians’ statement verifying a disability that prevents placement of a wheeled sanitation cart curbside for collection.
    • No other member of the household is capable of placing a wheeled sanitation cart curbside for collection.
  • Application Process:
    • Contact the Department of Public Works, 24-Hour Customer Service Center @ 283-4950 to request an appointment to fill out application or complete a request for an appointment using our online form. (The application appointments are made for your next garbage collection day)
    • A City of Des Moines, Sanitation Foreman will stop at your residence to explain the program details and assist you in filling out application with you and each person living there, if applicable. The Foreman will give you the necessary paperwork to be filled out by your Physician.
    • Once Physicians statement is received, you will be placed on the route for Non-Curbside collection services.

Garbage Collection Rates

All garbage collection fees are included in your monthly Des Moines Water Bill.   The City offers two sizes of collection cart: 

  • 96 gallon cart - $12 per month for initial cart and $10 per month for each additional 96 gallon cart.
  • 64 gallon cart - $11 per month for initial cart and $9 per month for each additional 64 gallon cart.

 

New Construction
  • Initiate garbage collection for new construction by calling us at 283-4950 or you can Submit a Garbage and Yard Waste Collection Request Form.
  • All garbage collection fees are included in your monthly Des Moines Water Bill. The City offers two sizes of collection cart:

    • 96 gallon cart - $12 per month for initial cart and $10 per month for each additional 96 gallon cart.

Moving
  • If you move out of your current residence, please leave the cart behind.
  • The cart is the property of the City of Des Moines and is assigned to the property.

 

Additional Garbage Collection Carts
  • We provide additional collection carts upon request.  You can request additional carts by calling us at 283-4950 or you can Submit a Garbage and Yard Waste Collection Request Form.
  • Subscription to additional carts requires a 6 month commitment.  Carts returned prior to 6 months will be charged a $25 early retrieval fee. 
  • Rate for additional 96 gallon cart is additional $10 per month (or) 64 gallon cart is additional $9 per month billed to your water bill.

 

Exchanging Collection Carts

 

Replacing Garbage Collection Carts
  • The collection cart is the responsibility of the property owner.
  • To request a replacement cart, contact the Public Works 24-Hour Customer Service Center at 283-4950 or Submit a Garbage and Yard Waste Collection Request Form .
  • Lost or stolen carts require a replacement fee. All fees will be billed to the monthly water bill. 
  • The replacement fees are: 
    • 64 gallon cart - $37
    • 96 gallon cart - $40

 

Broken Garbage Cart Lid or Body

 

Before Collection
  • Place cart curbside by 7:00 am (and no earlier than 5:00 pm the day before scheduled collection).
  • Do not over fill or over load the garbage cart.
  • The lid must be closed to assure collection.
  • Cart placement should be no more than 18" from the curb.
  • Cart should have metal bar facing the street.
  • Cart placement should be at least 3 feet from all permanent structures.  This includes other collection carts, yard bags or bundles, mailboxes, fences, wall, utility poles and other stationary items on the curb.
  • Cart should be placed on a level surface.
  • DO NOT place cart under low hanging tree branches.
  • DO NOT put yard waste in your garbage cart.

 

After Collection
  • Remove all collection carts from the designated collection point after collection.

 

Missed Garbage Collection
  • You can report a missed garbage collection by calling the Public Works 24-Hour Customer Service Center at 283-4950 or by Submit a Garbage and Yard Waste Collection Request Form.
  • What you should know before you report a missed collection:
    • Collection carts must be curbside at 7 AM on collection day.
    • Missed collections must be reported before 5 PM the day after collection.
    • Garbage carts put out after 7 AM on collection day will be subject to a $25 collection fee.
    • Collections reported later than 5 PM the following day will be subject to a $25 collection fee (added to your monthly water bill).

 

Holiday Collection
  • When the holiday listed below falls on a weekday, the garbage and yard waste collections will be delayed one day the remainder of that week.
    • New Years Day
    • Memorial Day
    • 4th of July
    • Labor Day
    • Thanksgiving Day
    • Christmas Day

 

Placement and Use of Collection Carts
  • Put your garbage /trash in disposable plastic bags or boxes inside the cart
    • Close the cart lid.  This prevents the scattering of debris by wind and animals. 
    • Cart should be placed within 18 inches of the street/curb
    • Metal bar should face the street
    • At least 3 feet away from permanent structures (Mailboxes, walls, utility poles, trees, or low hanging limbs, etc)
    • AT least 3 feet away from extra trash items (other collection carts, yard waste bags or yard bundles)
    • On a level surface
    •  Away from parked vehicles (You may need to use your drive approach)

 

What goes in the Collection Cart?
  • Garbage/trash in disposable plastic bags or boxes inside the cart
  • Styrofoam
  • Plastic Bags
  • Paper products – Tissues, Napkins, toilet paper and paper towels
  • Aluminum foil
  • Lids from jars
  • Paper contaminated with food
  • Containers that once held motor oil or antifreeze

 

Items Placed Outside the Collection Cart

Items placed outside the collection cart will be collected if they are properly stickered and meet requirements under Extra Trash Items, Large Items, and Appliance Collection below. 
 

Where do I purchase the Pink, City of Des Moines Extra Trash and Large Item Stickers?
Extra Trash Items
  • Each item placed outside the garbage collection cart must be stickered with a Pink, $1 City of Des Moines, Extra Trash sticker.
  • Items that fit in a 33 gallon bag or box no larger than 2’x2’x3’
  • List of Stores to Purchase Stickers.
  • Each properly stickered item will be collected on regular garbage collection day.  
  • Items cannot exceed 40 lbs.
  • Properly stickered items must be curbside before 7:00 am on regular collection day.

 

Large Items (does not include appliances)
  • Each large item requires a Pink, $5 City of Des Moines Large Item sticker. List of Stores to Purchase Stickers.
  • Items that do NOT fit in a 33 gallon bag or 2’x2’x3’ box 
  • Examples of large items include: furniture, mattresses, couches, tables and rolled carpet. (carpet must be rolled and tied in 4 foot lengths and 18 inches in diameter – 1 sticker for 5 rolls) 
  • Each properly stickered item will be collected on regular garbage collection day and must be curbside by 7:00 am.  
  • Your Collection crew will dispatch a bulk item crew to collect your large items on same day.  Please note: collection may take longer than normal garbage collection. 

 

Appliance Collection 
  • Collection Rate is $35 per appliance / Purchase and Attach (7) Pink, $5 City of Des Moines Large Item Stickers. 
  • You can purchase Pink, $5 Large Item Stickers at Des Moines Dahl’s or Hy-Vee Stores.  List of Stores to Purchase Stickers 
  • Appliances must be scheduled for collection by calling the Department of Public Works, 24-Hour Customer Service Center at 283-4950.
