Street Maintenance Mission
The Street maintenance Division of the Public Works Department is responsible for keeping all City streets and alleys in good repair and serviceable condition. With the goal of preserving street surfaces to avoid more costly reconstruction, the Street Maintenance Division uses a variety of techniques to extend the life of Des Moines' 913 miles of roadways.

Pothole Maintenance
Following the winter season, the Street Maintenance division devotes a big portion of its time to pothole maintenance. As weather permits we use a variety of patch techniques to repair potholes. You can help by making us aware of pothole locations. If a pothole presents an immediate danger please phone our Call Center at (515) 283-4950. You may report a pothole 24 hours a day 7 days a week by using our Report a Pothole Interactive Form.
Street Sweeping
Throughout the spring, summer, and fall Public Works cleans 913 miles of streets.
Street Lighting, Street Signals, Signage & Pavement Markings
Periodic restriping of pavement markings, maintenance of street signals and signage, and street lighting is managed by the Department of Engineering's Traffic and Transportation division. The Traffic and Transportation Division can be contacted between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday at (515) 283-4973.

Customer Satisfaction Survey
Street Maintenance project survey cards are delivered to the homes of residents in the area where the work is being done. Residents can provide feedback by completing the survey card and mailing it back or by completing our ONLINE SURVEY.
