  • Additional Project Information:The former central library, started construction in 1899 and opened in 1903, was the first of four major civic buildings on the Des Moines Riverfront. After the Des Moines Public Library moved its operation to a new facility, the World Food Prize entered into a 50-year lease from the city in 2009. The building, on the National Register of Historic Places, is being renovated in accordance with federal historic standards. It will also be one the largest-ever century-plus old buildings that will be certified as achieving Gold/Platinum LEED status for its significant energy and environmental sustainability measures.
