The comet ISON is on the way and you have two opportunities to view it from here on Earth at Ewing Park. On December 7th, members of the Des Moines Astronomical Society and The Science Center of Iowa will be hosting two separate times to view the comet. First viewing will be at 6:00 am and then a second viewing will take place from 4:30 -7:30 pm. Meet at the parking lot off of Indianola Avenue, bring binoculars if you have them and dress for the weather. The comet is thought to be less than one mile wide and moving towards the Earth at a speed greater than 150,000 mph. The closer ISON gets to the Sun, the faster it will move. If it survives the slingshot path around the Sun, it will be moving more than 800,000 mph, it will fly right over the Northern Hemisphere and then be shot back out to space never to return.
