DESCRIPTION OF APPLICABLE CODES

 

  • BUILDING CODE; RESIDENTIAL CODE; EXISTING BUILDINGS CODE:
    The City of Des Moines adopts the current edition of the International Building Code, the International Residential Code, and the International Existing Buildings Code (2006), published by the International Code Council. The code is adopted by reference with very few additions or deletions in the Municipal Code. Any revisions can be found in Chapter 26 of the Des Moines Municipal Code and is available at the Permit and Development Center.
    Local Condition Information:


The provisions of this code apply to the construction, alteration, moving, conversion, demolition, repair and use of any building or structure.

  • PLUMBING CODE:
    The City of Des Moines adopts the current edition of the Uniform Plumbing Code (2006) published by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO). This code is adopted by reference with some local modifications in the Municipal Code. The City of Des Moines is also obligated to enforce the Iowa State Plumbing Code.
  • ELECTRICAL CODE:
    The City of Des Moines adopts the current edition of the National Electrical Code (2005), published by the National Fire Protection Association. This code is adopted by reference with very few additions or deletions in the Municipal Code.
  • MECHANICAL CODE:
    The City of Des Moines adopts the current edition of the International Mechanical Code (2006), published by the International Code Council. This code is adopted by reference with very few additions or deletions in the Municipal Code.
  • FUEL GAS CODE:
    The City of Des Moines adopts the current edition of the International Fuel Gas Code (2006), published by the International Code Council. This code is adopted by reference with very few additions or deletions in the Municipal Code.
  • FIRE CODE:
    The City of Des Moines adopts the current edition of the International Fire Code (2006) , published by the International Code Council. This code is adopted by reference with very few additions or deletions in the Municipal Code.
  • ACCESSIBILITY CODE:
    The City of Des Moines is mandated to enforce Division 7 of the Iowa State Building Code; the Iowa State Accessibility Code; 2006 IBC and ANSI A117 - 2003 Edition
  • ENERGY CODE:
    The City of Des Moines is mandated to enforce the Iowa State Energy Code, 2006 International Energy Conservation Code. Projects in excess of 100,000 cubic feet are required to be reviewed and approve by the Iowa State Building Code Commissioner’s Office.
  • ZONING ORDINANCE:
    The City of Des Moines has planning and zoning regulations that are a part of the Municipal Code, which is administered by the Community Development Department.
  • ENGINEERING METROPOLITAN DESIGN STANDARDS:
    The City of Des Moines has adopted the Iowa Statewide Urban Design Standards for public Improvements for design and construction

  • TRAFFIC SAFETY REGULATIONS:
    The City of Des Moines has traffic safety regulations that are a part of the Municipal Code, which is administered by the Traffic Engineering Division of the Engineering Department.
  • HISTORIC DISTRICT ORDINANCE:
    The City of Des Moines has adopted local historic district regulations that are part of the Municipal Code, which is administered by the Community Development Department.
  • LANDMARK ORDINANCE:
    The City of Des Moines has adopted local landmark standards that are part of the Municipal Code, which is administered by the Community Development Department.
  • SUBDIVISION ORDINANCE:
    The City of Des Moines has subdivision regulations, applicable for the platting of land, that are part of the Municipal Code. The Community Development Department administers these regulations.
  • SKYWALK REGULATIONS:
    The City of Des Moines has skywalk regulations that exist specifically in the Des Moines Municipal Code. Both operational and construction standards regulate where skywalks may be placed, how they are to be operated as well as standards mandate how these features will be constructed. The Community Development Department and the Engineering Department administer these Codes.
