Excellence in Historic Preservation Awards

Requirements for Entries:

Nominations must be received by Friday, April 15, 2005

Completed nomination form

Description of project which should be two pages or less. May include research as to what was original. Give some "hows and whys" of the project.

Submit one set of photographs, preferably "before" and "after" photos, showing all sides of the structure or special project. Include photos showing the primary facade and project, if different. If historic photos are available, include one copy.
Mark photos with owner's name, address and directional view of photo.

Submission of entry allows the Historic Preservation Commission and/or the City of Des Moines to release and publish the information and photographs (with credit).

Entry Categories

Residential

I. Exterior Rehabilitation - Appropriate renovation or restoration

II. Sympathetic Additions (Exterior only) - Period or modern designs which are compatible with the original design.

III. Other Projects - Examples: Period landscaping; restoration of wood carved features; restoration of stencils and murals; porch restoration.

Commercial/Institutional

IV. Exterior Rehabilitation - Appropriate exterior renovation or restoration of a commercial or institutional building.

V. Exterior Adaptive Reuse - Appropriate renovation or restoration of a building for a use other than its original one.

VI. Other Projects - Open category for a wide range of worthy preservation projects.

Other

VII. Individual or Group - Outstanding in preservation efforts and resides or whose work is done within the City of Des Moines

Who May Enter

Property owners or professionals such as architects, draftspersons, or con- tractors who were substantially involved in the project may apply. Entries submitted by professionals must include an authorization letter from the owner.

Eligible Structures

Buildings must be at least fifty (50) years old and within the corporate limits of the City of Des Moines. Projects must have been completed in the last ten (l0) years. Both public and private property is eligible.

Projects involving properties less than fifty (50) years old may also be eligible if the building is determined to have exceptional architectural or historic significance.
