Involuntary Annexation Proposal

The City of Des Moines has initiated an involuntary annexation of 5,933 acres, most of which are located near the recently completed Highway 5/Highway 65 beltway at the south, southeast, and northeast boundaries of the City. The annexation would also include all the islands of unincorporated land within the City boundaries.

On August 30, 2005, the State of Iowa’s City Development Board approved the petition for involuntary annexation.

On November 8, 2005, the citizens of Des Moines and the residents of the involuntary annexation areas will have the opportunity to vote on the annexation.

The original involuntary annexation petition was submitted to the State of Iowa’s City Development Board in 1998. However, due to the passage of time, updated facts and figures were provided to the City Development Board on July 13, 2005. This updated information can be viewed below:
