Zoning Ordinance Update

The City of Des Moines is conducting the first comprehensive update of the zoning ordinance in over 35 years. The impetus for the update is to implement the vision of The 2020 Community Character Plan with land use regulations that are more easily understood and accessible to the public and applicants.

The Zoning Ordinance Update process includes workshops, review meetings and hearings on the proposed ordinance text prior to final adoption.

Extensive opportunity for public participation in the form of information workshops and public hearings, as well as regular postings on the City’s web pages, will be integral to the process.

Public comments are welcome throughout the process. While a specific reply to each public comment is not possible, all comments received will be maintained in a database and forwarded to the appropriate bodies for consideration.
