Traffic Safety Committee

The Des Moines Traffic Safety Committee was established by the Des Moines City Council to review traffic engineering studies made by the Traffic and Transportation Division of the City of Des Moines Engineering Department, and provide recommendations to the Council as a result of their review. In Particular, the Traffic Safety Committee:

• Advises the City Council and makes recommendations on matters pertaining to traffic control measures at school crossings.
• Advises the City Council and makes recommendations on matters pertaining to traffic safety conditions and the efficient movement of pedestrian and vehicular traffic on the city streets.
• Advises the City Council and makes recommendations on matters pertaining to the Municipal Parking System, including parking meters and city-owned parking lots and garages.
• Performs such other and further duties as the City Council may from time to time request of the Committee (such as major construction projects or new developments that may impact traffic volumes and/or existing traffic controls).

Terms of office for members are staggered terms of three years. The expiration date for all terms appointed members shall be December 31.

The Traffic Safety Committee consists of 11 voting members. The Mayor and City Council Members appoint seven citizens who, through their employment or public service, have demonstrated knowledge or an interest in the traffic safety field. Four members are ex-officio members representing:

• Des Moines Independent Community School District
• Citywide PTA
• Police Department
• Engineering Department, Traffic and Transportation Division
