YEAR 2007 CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
INVOLVING MAJOR STREETS

Office of Traffic and Transportation
Updated: April 13, 2007

The following is a list of planned projects for the year 2007 construction season, which involve closing or restricting traffic along major streets. Advance notification of each project will also be done individually, closer to the beginning of project construction:

  1. McKinley Widening at SE 5th
This project consists of an intersection widening to provide left-turn lanes on all four approaches. Traffic signals will also be installed, replacing the current 4-way stop condition. Construction should begin this spring and be completed later in the fall.

  2. E 30th and State Realignment
This project will realign the E 30th Street and State Avenue intersection to create a more direct connection between E 30th and E 29th Streets along State Avenue. Construction should begin this spring and be completed by August.

  3. SW 7th and Indianola Road Intersection
This project consists of minor median and lane modifications at this intersection, along with upgraded traffic signals, to allow dual eastbound left-turn lanes. Construction should begin this summer and be completed in the fall.

  4. Ingersoll Streetscape, from 28th Street to 29th Street
Lane closures on Ingersoll Avenue will be needed during various stages of this project. 28th Street, north of Ingersoll, may be restricted for storm sewer construction. Utility relocation is scheduled to begin in June, with streetscape work from July to November.

  5. SE 6th Street Viaduct over Des Moines River
Work on this bridge is scheduled for late summer or early fall of this year. It’s anticipated that the bridge will not need to be closed but traffic restrictions will be necessary.

  6. Des Moines River Outfall – Downtown sewer crossing 2nd Avenue
A large box sewer has been constructed along the west side of the Des Moines River. This next stage will cross 2nd Avenue, north of Grand, and then along Watson Powell to a connection in 3rd Street. Construction will be phased to maintain traffic, with lane restrictions, while crossing 2nd Avenue. Watson Powell will be closed from 2nd Avenue to 3rd Street during that phase of work. Also, Locust Street, west of the river bridge, will be closed for several weeks to place the permanent street pavement. This project should be complete by mid-summer.

  7. 12th Street Storm Sewer, from Cherry Street to north of Grand Avenue
Construction of this storm sewer will require the closing of 12th Street in stages. Also, Walnut Street at 12th will be closed for up to 40 days. Closures necessary at Grand Avenue and at Locust Street will only occur on weekends. This project is scheduled to begin in April, with completion late in the summer.

  8. 13th and Jefferson Sewer Reroute
This project will construct a sanitary sewer from 13th Street and Jefferson Avenue to a connection in Prospect Park. This will involve crossing Hickman Road, with traffic restricted to one lane in each direction during the work. The project is scheduled to begin in early fall and be completed in mid-summer of 2008.

  9. SW Area Diversion Facility - WRA
This project is south of the city limits, but will close R63 (extension of SW 9th St), a commuter route, for up to two weeks for construction of the North River Interceptor sewer.

Street Resurfacing Projects:
Scarification work will not be allowed during peak hours, 6:00 – 9:00 AM and 3:30 – 7:00 PM. Traffic in both directions must be maintained at all times. Paving will take place at night (8:00 PM – 6:00 AM) or during the weekend. The street may be closed during paving.

  1. Hickman Road, 30th St to Merle Hay Rd
  2. ML King Jr Pkwy, Hickman Rd to south of Euclid Ave
  3. SW 9th St, Jarvis St to north of Creston Ave
  4. E Grand Ave, Penn Ave to E 14th St
  5. SE 6th St, Hillside St to Livingston Ave
  6. Hickman Rd, ML King Jr Pkwy to 9th St
  7. Easton Blvd, Stewart St to Delaware Ave
  8. 28th St, School St to Center St
  9. E Grand Ave, east of E 18th St to E 20th Ct

Please visit the Iowa DOT’s website (www.I235.com) for information and updates on this project.
