The Des Moines Municipal Housing Agency (DMMHA) offers a Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program to assist families either leasing DMMHA housing units or families participating in Section 8 rental assistance programs. FSS helps families work towards a goal of becoming financially self-sufficient. Each family works with a caseworker to develop an individual plan, which will include steps that the family will take to reach their goals and the support or help they might need, including individual case management. If a family's rent is increased over time due to increased household income, a percentage of the rent increase may go into a escrow savings account established by the DMMHA. Families who reach their goals receive the escrow savings account upon successful completion of the program.
