Flowering Annuals Available for Community Groups
Each year the Des Moines Park and Recreation Department grows and distributes over 150,000 annuals to community groups to beautify public spaces including medians, street corners, parkways, and land owned by nonprofits including schools within the city limits of Des Moines. If you or your group is interested in beautifying our public spaces, contact your neighborhood association as they are asked to coordinate orders for their neighborhood. To find out what neighborhood association you are located in contact the City Action Center at 283-4500 or visit www.dmgov.org under “Residents-Neighborhoods”. If your neighborhood association doesn't participate in the this program, your organization can order directly from us. Neighborhood associations leaders can download an order form by clicking the links below. All new and existing flower beds on city property such as medians, park land, libraries, vacant lots and street corners must be approved by the zone supervisor in your area of town. Our Parks staff is there to assist you in properly placing your garden beds and may be able to assist with bed preparation for larger plots. Any flower bed planted on land not owned or maintained by the City of Des Moines such as schools or community centers need not contact park staff. Contact information for park staff is located in the document "Introduction for Neighborhood Associations" letter on the website. Call 323-8907 with questions. The forms are due back to the Parks Department by April 15th and flowers pick-up is Friday, May 16th and Saturday, May 17th from 8:00 – 1:00 at the City’s greenhouses located 2501 Maury.

Perennials Available
Do you need more perennials in your community garden either for an existing garden or the creation of a new one? Order perennials through the “Great Perennial Divide”. Each spring gardeners throughout Des Moines donate their extra plant material to the “Great Perennial Divide”. The plants ranged from shade loving to full sun, herbs, plants for butterfly gardens, berry bushes, and house plants. The process to receive perennials is simple - you don't need to tell us what you need - just have an idea of what type of garden you want and where you want to plant it. The Perennial Divide is on Saturday, May 17th from 9:00 - 12:00. Contact the Parks Department at 323-8907 or TLDawson@dmgov.org by April 15th if you are interested in receiving perennials for your public garden space.
Volunteer in the Greenhouse
In order for those good-looking annuals to be ready in May, we need lots of hands to help transplant in the greenhouses this spring. The amount of flowers the Parks Department can grow is very dependent on the number of volunteers in the greenhouse. Please come and help transplant. Check out the information on volunteer at http://www.dmgov.org/departments/pr/volunteering/
