Summary
of Sidewalk Ordinance
The
City Council has adopted Sidewalk Ordinance
modifications aimed at getting defective
sidewalks replaced sooner. By
ordinance, property owners who are notified
that their sidewalk is defective have
90 days within to have it replaced. Those
that fail to do so are now subject to
a $500 civil citation. A permit is required
for a property owner or a contractor
they hire to replace or repair a sidewalk.
The permit costs $25 and is available
in the City's Permit and Development Office
in the Armory building at 602 E. First
Street.
Income
eligible property owners may apply for
subsidy
assistance
. If approved within
30 days from the date of notification
of defective sidewalk, the City will arrange
to have their sidewalk replaced.
Property
owners with defective brick sidewalks
are encouraged to repair rather that replace
their sidewalk by themselves or under
contract. By policy, local neighborhood
associations are also notified when a
residential brick sidewalk is declared
defective so they may render assistance
to the property owner. The Public Works
Department will sell property owners replacement
sidewalk brick at a cost of 50 cents each.
