Snow & Ice Control Operations
City
of Des Moines – Public Works Department
When
it snows we often hear the announcement that the “Snow
Ordinance” has gone into effect, but what does
that mean?
It
means snow has accumulated on the City’s 213
miles (665 land miles) of streets posted as Snow Routes.
City road crews plow Snow Routes first and vehicles
parked on Snow Route streets when the Snow Ordinance
is in effect, may be ticketed and towed to facilitate
plowing operations. Moving your vehicle to an alternate
parking spot until the Snow Route streets are plowed
helps our crews clear these heavily traveled streets
curb to curb.
What
happens if I don’t move my car?
If
your vehicle is left on a Snow Route when the Snow
Ordinance is in effect, you may be given a ticket
and your vehicle may be towed. The fine for parking
on the street during a snow event is $35, plus you
will also have to pay towing and impound release costs,
besides the inconvenience of having to retrieve your
vehicle. So, it’s always best to move your vehicle
to an alternate location until the Snow Route streets
are cleared and the Snow Ordinance is no longer in
effect.
How
will I know when it’s okay to park my car on
the street again?
When the snow ordinance is no longer in effect, the
local media will be notified so you’ll probably
hear it on the television or radio. You can also check
our website at www.dmgov.org to see if the parking
ban has been lifted. Or for more information, you
