David Harmon
Superintendent of Maintenance

Superintendent David Harmon joined the Des Moines Fire Department on January 8, 1990 as a Fire Equipment Mechanic. On April 12, 1993 after 39 months of service with the department, he was promoted to the position of Fire Maintenance Superintendent.

As Fire Maintenance Superintendent, he supervises and assists 5 Fire Equipment Mechanics in the repair and maintenance of 86 Fire Department vehicles/apparatus, all of the department's fire fighting equipment, along with 10 Fire Stations, 1 Training Facility and 1 Shop Facility. He also prepares specifications for the purchase of department vehicles, fire apparatus, fire fighting equipment and station equipment.

Prior to his employment with the Fire Department, Superintendent Harmon attended Technical College and graduated with honors to become certified in automotive/diesel maintenance and repairs. Later he also became certified through ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) for complete automotive repairs/maintenance. He was a journeyman mechanic for 14 years prior to his employment with the Fire Department. As Fire Maintenance Superintendent, he is now certified in many additional areas related to the fire service.
