Celebrate 125 Years of Parks
Join former Volunteer of the Year winner Steve Nelson-Vaux Tuesday, May 2 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 as he discusses the evolution of the park system from its earliest days to the present. This free event will be held at the Richard A. Clark Municipal Service Center, located at 1551 E MLK Jr. Parkway.
New Youth Volleyball Program!
Des Moines Parks and Recreation is excited to partner with Des Moines Public Schools to offer a new program, youth volleyball! Open to children grades 1-7. Registration is $50 per person or $475 per team, with jersey included and ends May 7. Volunteer coaches will be offered a free coaching clinic at the beginning of the season.
Still Time to Register
If you are 16 years old and a proficient swimmer, become an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. This course will help you teach skills that may save a life, gain terrific work experience as an aquatics professional and earn money while you help people learn valuable skills. Cost is $175 per person.
Lifeguard Training Offered!
Register today to become lifeguard certified! Participants will be trained with the knowledge and skills to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Must have the ability to swim 300 yards. Participants are expected to have classroom and in water participation every day. Registration is $100 per person.
New Annual Report Available
Des Moines Parks and Recreation is pleased to provide residents with the “2016 Report to the Community.” This report provides a high level overview of many of the department’s significant accomplishments over the past year.
Get to know the birds that stop by Gray’s Lake Park as they pass by on their journey north. The lunch time sessions are free and perfect for all ages. Participants will meet from 11:00-11:45 am at Gray’s Lake every Wednesday starting March 1st and continuing through May 31st.
Adult Bags Registration Open!
Sign up your duo for our summer adult bags league! Played at the Hub Spot, teams of two compete for six weeks to become the bean bag champions. Registration ends June 1, cost to register is $35 per team.

Get Your Groove on This Summer!
Try out rock and roll or hip hop music camps this summer presented in partnership with the Des Moines Music Coalition. Cost is $40 per person per camp and participants get to perform live at the 80/35 Music Festival. Designed for kids aged 11-15. Register online through 6/12.

Our department is responsible for the management of 76 parks, over 4,000 acres of parkland, 81 miles of trails, seven cemeteries and numerous municipal facilities.
