Police Technology Services
The Police Technology Services (PTS) unit is staffed with seven positions. The largest and most important function of the unit is to keep the data systems for the Des Moines Police Department and Public Safety Communications operating and functioning at a high level of efficiency. Each staff position has specific responsibilities related to:
- The Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD)
- The Records Management System (RMS)
- The installation of a Mobile Data network expected to exceed 75 units in fiscal year 2007-2008
- User Desktop Support of over 350 personal computer workstations
- Crime Analysis & Reporting
- Database Management & Reporting
- Technology Management
These tasks require daily maintenance, monitoring and performance analysis. Additionally a key component is periodic upgrades of both hardware and software.
Additional responsibilities of the unit include:
- Establishing and managing computer system protocols necessary for connecting the Police Department's computer applications to outside agencies
- Technical support of over 35 public safety software applications unique to the department in 11 locations around the city
- Extracting data from police case reports and reporting to the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBERS)
