K-9 Unit
The Des Moines Police Department Canine Unit hit the streets of the City in December of 2000 with three canine teams. The Des Moines Police K-9 Unit is under the command of a Police Captain. The Canine Unit has expanded to five canine teams. All of the canines are certified as Police Dog One and Detector Dogs through the United States Police Canine Association. The canines are used for a variety of purposes such as tracking missing adults and children, as well as criminal suspects, evidence and building searches, drug detection and criminal apprehension. The canines are very important tools and a large asset to the Des Moines Police Department in its fight against crime and protecting the citizens of Des Moines.
