Soil Sampling

The professional staff on the Plant Field Services Team at the WRF offers soil sampling to area farmers and cities. Soil sampling can be performed in the spring, summer or fall to determine fertilizer needs. Summer soil samples are taken from cornfields when the crop is 6 to 12 inches tall. Results from these samples can be used to determine if sufficient nitrogen is present for optimum crop yield.

Plant Sampling

The Des Moines Metro WRF offers plant sampling of mature cornfields in the fall. Results from these plant samples determine if there was sufficient nitrogen throughout the growing season for optimum yields. Data from these tests can be used to develop a nitrogen management program for future crop years.

Fertilizer Recommendations
