Authorization to proceed with corridor preliminary design and appropriate sections of final design of East Indianola Avenue Widening - S.E. 14th to Army Post Road
Council authorization to proceed with corridor preliminary design and appropriate section of final design is requested for East Indianola Avenue Widening - S.E. 14th to Army Post Road.
Funding for a corridor study is available in the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget, Fund CP038, Organization ENG990000, STR213 – East Indianola Avenue Widening – SE 14th to Army Post Road, Activity ID 01-2005-028.
Approval
This authorization is for a corridor study for the reconstruction of East Indianola Avenue from SE 14th Street to Army Post Road. The roadway would be reconstructed to urban street standards. Rapid development in the southeast section of the city has resulted in increased traffic, accelerating deterioration of the old narrow pavement and increasing maintenance costs. The section north of Ewing Park will become either a five-lane roadway or a four-lane roadway with left-turn lanes at intersections such as Watrous and Evergreen Avenues. The section south of Ewing Park will become a four-lane divided boulevard-type roadway. A separate bike trail may be included along the west side of the roadway. The corridor study will include evaluation of traffic flow on Indianola Avenue, as well as the major intersections. In addition, an environmental assessment will be completed as part of the study. These activities in the corridor study are necessary to prepare for potential federal funds.
Council will be presented a consultant agreement after the Request for Proposals (RFP) process is completed.
