AGENDA HEADING:
Approving

SYNOPSIS:
Recommend
approval of Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) Agreement No. 2007-TS-010
for Traffic Safety Improvement Program project funding for E. Army Post Road
Widening from South Union Street to S.E. 5th Street. IDOT funds in the amount of $500,000 are
available for the construction costs.
The City’s portion of the project, consisting of the design, inspection,
and construction costs, is estimated to be $500,000.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Amount: $1,000,000
Funding
Source: Various funding sources as follows:
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
In July of 2005, City Council authorized an application to be submitted to the IDOT for E. Army Post Road Widening from South Union Street to S.E. 5th Street. The IDOT has approved $500,000 for this project. The remaining costs, including design, inspection, and construction administration, are to be funded by the City. The total City cost is estimated to be $500,000.
This
project would involve widening E. Army Post Road to a five-lane facility in
order to provide a center two-way left-turn lane. The previously constructed intersection improvements on E. Army
Post Road at South Union Street and S.E. 5th Street would remain in
place. The widening would occur in
between these two intersections. It is
anticipated that the project would be constructed within the existing
right-of-way. In July of 2006, City
Council authorized that an additional application be submitted to the IDOT for
Army Post Road Widening from South Union Street to S.W. 9th
Street. If funding is approved by the
IDOT, these two segments will be combined into one project for construction.
