AGENDA HEADING:

 

Approving dissolution of the Greater South Side Neighborhood Association and removal from the City of Des Moines’ list of Recognized Neighborhoods.

 

 

SYNOPSIS:

 

Recommend approval to dissolve the Greater South Side Neighborhood Association and to remove it from the City of Des Moines’ list of Recognized Neighborhoods for failure to meet the requirements of the city’s Neighborhood Recognition Policy.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: 

 

On May 24, 1993, by Roll Call No. 93-2026, the City Council approved the Neighborhood Recognition Policy.  This policy sets guidelines for the formal recognition of neighborhood associations by the City of Des Moines.  This formal relationship makes it possible for recognized neighborhoods to act as advisors to the City on issues impacting their neighborhoods.

 

Neighborhood organizations must meet the requirements of the Neighborhood Recognition Policy to achieve and maintain recognition by the City of Des Moines.  This includes submitting a variety of information annually, including the current list of neighborhood leadership and minutes from the neighborhoods’ annual meeting.  To facilitate this requirement, the Community Development Department, with the oversight of the Neighborhood Revitalization Board (NRB), conducts an annual survey of the neighborhoods.  This year’s survey was mailed January 12, 2007, and was due February 28, 2007.

 

Fifty of the fifty-one Recognized Neighborhoods responded to the survey.  No response was received from the Greater South Side Neighborhood Association.  Staff has been in contact with former officers of the group who indicate that they are no longer interested in being a Recognized Neighborhood.  In accordance with the Neighborhood Recognition Policy, the NRB voted on May 2, 2007, to forward a recommendation to City Council that the City of Des Moines no longer formally recognize the Greater South Side Neighborhood Association.
