AGENDA HEADING:

Approving donation of “Mother’s Pearl” Sculpture for display at Principal Park.

SYNOPSIS:

Approving and accepting a sculpture entitled “Mother’s Pearl” by Jane DeDecker at Principal Park Stadium. This sculpture is being donated by Barbara & Michael Gartner to the City for the continued enjoyment of the public, having been on display at the stadium since the summer of 2007. The Park and Recreation Director has reviewed this request and recommends acceptance of the gift and continued display of the sculpture at Principal Park.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The City of Des Moines owns Principal Park and the immediate areas surrounding it. On August 26, 1991, the City Council entered into a lease of Principal Park and its vicinity with the Greater Des Moines Baseball Company. The lease allows Greater Des Moines Baseball Co. to operate Principal Park Stadium and assumes responsibility of general maintenance therein. On August 23, 2004 the City Council acted to extend the term of lease to December 31, 2022 with two five-year renewal options.

The gift donation of this statue by Barbara and Michael Gartner will be for the enjoyment of the public and improvement of the overall aesthetics of Principal Park. The gift is appraised at $52,000. All maintenance and upkeep will be provided by the Greater Des Moines Baseball Company.
