AGENDA HEADING:
Pledging contribution to Des Moines Art Center Hands on Des Moines Campaign.
SYNOPSIS:
Recommend
approval to pledge $20,000 to the Des Moines Art
Center Hands on Des Moines Campaign, as part of a total $7,090,000 capital
campaign, and as match for a Vision Iowa
grant.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Amount:
$20,000
Funding
Source: Efforts will be made to secure Bravo funding
of this request. If Bravo funding cannot
be secured, funds will be used from the 2007-2008 Operating Budget, Fund SP746,
Org CMO980716, Economic Development Enterprise
Fund, pg. 87.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The Hands
on Des Moines campaign’s capital component focuses on preserving the Art Center’s
buildings and their internationally renowned collections. The Art Center’s
three buildings, built in 1948, 1968, and 1985, are in need of repairs. Funds from the capital campaign would not be
used for general upkeep, but would be used for significant repairs and
improvements such as boiler repairs, expanding vault storage, improved
security, roof replacement, new lighting, replacement windows, loading dock
renovation, and accessibility improvements.
The Art
Center has raised capital funds in
excess of $3,000,000 to date, and is requesting $2,000,000 from Vision Iowa. Pledges have been received from Polk County
($25,000), State of Iowa
($100,000) and numerous foundations and corporations. Vision Iowa
requires a city contribution before they will consider the grant request. The City has been working with other metro
area cities to receive Vision Iowa
acceptance of Bravo funds as a local match.
If this effort is successful, our first option will be to secure Bravo
funding for this purpose. Otherwise, a
City funding source has been identified.
