AGENDA HEADING:

 

Approval of 2009 Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau Section 163/410 Grant Application

 

 

SYNOPSIS:

 

Recommend approval of the 2009 Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau Section 163/410 Grant Application directed at alcohol/drug-related and other traffic violations.  This grant is a traffic enforcement grant that the Des Moines Police Department has received since 1988.

 

 

FISCAL IMPACT:

 

Amount:  $92,220

 

Funding Source:  National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Public Law 105-178, Section 410.  2007-2008 Operating Budget, Page 288, Special Revenue Funds, SP751.  Organizational Code will be assigned once award notice has been received.

 

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

 

The grant application provides $92,220 for the Police Department to fund the following: 

  • $78,498 for officer overtime to conduct 1800 hours of traffic enforcement directed at alcohol/drug-related and other traffic violations;
  • $4,972 of officer overtime to conduct 114 hours of educational programs from K-12 to college level students,
  • $6,500 for educational pamphlets with an alcohol awareness and impaired driving message;
  • $2,250 for five (5) preliminary breath testers (PBTs). 

 

The grant period is from October 01, 2008 through September 30, 2009.  There is no match for this grant.
