AGENDA HEADING:

 

Approval of procurement of additional uniform services for the Police Department from Carpenter Uniform & Promotional Products.

 

 

SYNOPSIS:

 

Recommend approval of procurement of additional uniform services for the Police Department from Carpenter Uniform & Promotional Products.  The City has a contract with Carpenter Uniform to provide uniform apparel to the Police Department.  The amount of the contract needs to be increased, primarily because of a change to the alternate style of summer shirt, cargo pants and shorts for summer wear.  Funds in the Department operating budget have been re-allocated to cover this increase.

 

 

FISCAL IMPACT:

 

Amount:  $75,000

 

Funding Source:  FY07-08, Operating Budget, State Forfeited Funds from SP324 POL982200, page 84.

 

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

 

On January 8, 2007, The City Council had approved an expenditure of $147,000 for uniform services with Carpenter Uniform and Promotional Products, 5801 Thornton, Des Moines, Iowa 50321. Part of this service consisted of stocking yellow short sleeved Polo shirts for the police department.

 

This year staff discovered these same shirts were being individually replaced much sooner than initially anticipated. The summer shirt lettering and coloring were fading out during a normal rate of laundering. Officers on the street were not as visible to the public as originally intended by the department. Review of this situation resulted in the changing to a more durable and color fast garment. The change required replacement of all of the old shirts, which increased the allotted expenditure. The cargo pants were also an addition since they matched the new shirts in color and durability.

 

This fiscal year also included the introduction of cargo shorts for summer wear. These shorts are in addition to the required uniform apparel.
