Recommend City Council approval for travel & training requests listed below.

*Community fund-raising efforts are underway to help defray the costs of the trip to Tampa, Florida to compete for the All America City award.

 

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Jeff Aldrich (NR-0) Lieutenant, to Tampa, FL, from June 16 – June 20, 2009 ($1,520), to attend the National Civic League Annual Meeting.  The winner of the All America City Awards will be announced at this meeting, of which the City of Des Moines is a finalist.  A final presentation will be required at this meeting to be eligible to win this award.

D. Scott Baker (NR-0) Senior Police Officer, to Tampa, FL, from June 16 – June 20, 2009 ($1,470), to attend the National Civic League Annual Meeting.  The winner of the All America City Awards will be announced at this meeting, of which the City of Des Moines is a finalist.  A final presentation will be required at this meeting to be eligible to win this award.

Jack Beardsley (NR-1) Sergeant, Special Events Coordinator, to Quebec, CAN, from May 31 – June 4, 2009, ($2,959), to attend the 2009 North Americas Supercorridor Coalition Conference.  The conference updates the latest developments and discussions concerning a variety of issues related to transportation and trade with the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Bruce E. Bergman (R-0) City Attorney, to Miami, FL, from October 17 – October 22, 2009 ($1,900), to attend the 2009 International Municipal Lawyers Association’s Annual Meeting.  The meeting includes workshops on land use, economic development, brownfield remediation, municipal finance, how the economy affects local government, and various other topics.

Jason Halifax (NR-0) Senior Police Officer, go Huntsville, AL, from May 23 – July 4, 2009 ($5,275), to attend the Federal Bureau of Investigation Hazardous Devices School.  Attendance at a course to obtain Basic Certification, which is required for explosive ordinance disposal operations and is Federally mandated for all EOD technicians.

Lawrence R. The amended budget for travel in Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 is $367,874 reflecting a 29.3% reduction from the original adopted budget of $520,011.  The amended budget for training in Fiscal Year (FY09) is $311,045 reflecting a 1% reduction from the original adopted budget of $313,997.  The amount expended for travel & training in FY 2009 as of May 11, 2009 is $395,815.

Action:              The City Council approved a revision to the policy for travel authorization requests.  Such revision requires trips that exceed three days and $1,250 be approved by the Council.  The number in parentheses indicates the total number of trips previously authorized for that individual for the current budget year.
