AGENDA HEADING:

Authorize City Manager to negotiate and execute agreement with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for an AmeriCorps member for service in the City of Des Moines Information Technology Department.

SYNOPSIS:

The DNR and the City of Des Moines share common goals for collecting, building and analyzing local Geographic Information System (GIS) data through partnerships that cross city, county, state and federal levels of government.

Through this agreement with the DNR’s Keepers of the Land AmeriCorps Program, the City’s Information Technology Department will be able to obtain the services of an AmeriCorps member (intern) for 450 hours of service over a 3 month period. This intern will support the City’s activities as steward of the Des Moines Area Regional GIS and contribute volunteer time to natural resource enhancement in the City. The City will select the intern and be solely responsible for supervising the day-to-day work of the intern. The intern will not be a City employee.

The DNR will enroll the AmeriCorps member by signing a program contract with him or her. The DNR will pay the AmeriCorps member using grant funds made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and Federal AmeriCorps Program. The DNR will provide all human resources administration and orientation for this position.

The term of the agreement would be for 3 months.
