AGENDA HEADING:

 

Acceptance of 2009 Recovery Act: Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Formula Program:  Local Solicitation grant award.

 

 

SYNOPSIS:

 

Recommend acceptance of the Des Moines Police Department’s grant award from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance.  The grant will fund improvements in forensic capabilities, upgrade technology, fund equipment that will address officer safety and provide for procedural efficiencies.  The City of Des Moines will act as fiscal agent for this grant.

 

 

FISCAL IMPACT:

 

The total award amount is $1,502,161 with allocations to the County of Polk and Cities of Altoona, Ankeny, Clive, Des Moines, Johnston, Pleasant Hill, Urbandale, and West Des Moines.

Funding Source:  The 2009 Recovery Act: Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Formula Program:  Local Solicitation is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) of 2009, P.L. 111-5.  FY2009-2010 Operating Budget, Page 252, Special Revenue Funds, SP751, POL984135.

 

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

 

The Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance has allocated a total of $1,502,161.  The Cities and County have agreed on the individual funding allocations as determined by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS):

City of Ankeny                            $31,459

City of Clive                                $32,041

City of Des Moines                 $1,178,833

City of Johnston                          $10,195

City of Pleasant Hill                    $11,069

The grant period is from March 1, 2009 through February 28, 2013.
