AGENDA
HEADING:
Approval of a request to the U.S.
Department of Labor for a six month extension of the Multiple Education
Pathways Blueprint (MEPB) program.
SYNOPSIS:
At their meeting on June 4, 2007, by Roll Call No.
07-1083, the City Council approved submitting a grant application to the U.S.
Department of Labor (DOL) – Employment Training Administration for $300,000 of
DOL funding to implement a Multiple Education Pathways Blueprint. The city was notified on June 28, 2007 that
the application was approved for $491,666 for the period from July 1, 2007
through June 30, 2009. At their meeting on September 10, 2007, by Roll Call No.
07 – 1787 the City Council authorized the Mayor to sign the grant agreement,
submit a revised budget incorporating the additional funds and approved a
sub-recipient agreement with the Des Moines Area Community College to implement the program.
It is now necessary to authorize the Mayor to submit a request to DOL
for a six month extension of the project from July 1, 2009 to December 31,
2009.

ADDITIONAL
INFORMATION:
This six month extension will allow the project to
complete the development of alternative strategies to assist youth to stay in
school. The extension activities will
provide more detailed development of such strategies via Project Director led
Drop-Out Reengagement undertakings in line with MEPB gap analysis
research. This is a no-cost extension
and does not require any line item increases or budget modifications. There is approximately $125,000 remaining.
