AGENDA HEADING:

Approving Change Order No. 3 with Corell Contractor, Inc. & Subsidiary for additional work on the SE Connector Paving – S.W. 2nd Street to S.E. 6th Street, for a total not to exceed $299,000.

SYNOPSIS:

Recommend approval of Change Order No. 3 in an amount not to exceed $299,000 with Corell Contractor, Inc. & Subsidiary, Grant S. Corell, President, 1300 Lincoln Street, West Des Moines, Iowa, 50265, for the installation of 330 LF of 30-inch DIP water main.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Amount:  $299,000 (no City cost)

Funding Source:  2009-10 CIP, Page Street-35, Southeast Connector – SW 2nd to SE 6th Street, STR214, being funded 100% by Des Moines Water Works.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The contract for the construction of the Southeast Connector Paving – S.W. 2nd Street to S.E. 6th Street was awarded to Corell Contractor, Inc. & Subsidiary, in the amount of $6,366,096.13.  Part of this construction contract is to pave the section of the Southeast Connector from Water Street to S.W. 2nd Street.

Des Moines Water Works has evaluated the capacity of their existing water distribution system against their future needs for the area east of the Des Moines River in the vicinity of the Southeast Connector.  Their analysis has revealed a lack of capacity for future development that needs to be improved.

Des Moines Water Works wishes to improve the capacity of their system by installing a 30-inch water main across the Des Moines River in the near future, however, the section which crosses under the Southeast Connector Paving in Water Street should be added to this contract and installed prior to the construction of this section of the Southeast Connector.  This lump sum change order item pays for all of the material and labor necessary to add 330 LF of 30-inch DIP water main, as well as all of the valves, fittings, fire hydrants, steel casing pipe, sheet piling, cathodic protection, and traffic control necessary to make the revisions to the water main system.  The entire cost of this water main extension is being paid for by Des Moines Water Works.  This change order work and subsequent payment to the City was approved by the Des Moines Water Works Board of Trustees at their November 17, 2009, meeting.
