ORDINANCE NO. 13,845
AN ORDINANCE to change the name of the portion of Keosauqua Way extending east from 7th Street to Grand Avenue as Watson Powell, Jr. Way.
WHEREAS, the Watson Powell Jr., was a prominent citizen of the City of Des Moines known for his contributions to development of the downtown business district, to the cause of human and civil rights, and to the growth of American Republic Insurance Company and to the Iowa insurance industry; and,
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Des Moines desires to recognize Watson Powell Jr. by renaming a portion of Keosauqua Way to "Watson Powell, Jr. Way" in his honor;
THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of the City of Des Moines, Iowa:
Section 1. That the portion of the street within the City of Des Moines, Iowa, designated and known as "Keosauqua Way" and extending east from 7th Street to Grand Avenue is hereby designated and shall be known as "Watson Powell, Jr. Way."
Sec. 2. That every reference in the Municipal Code of the City of Des Moines, Iowa, 2000, to the portion of Keosauqua Way extending east from 7th Street to Grand Avenue shall be interpreted to refer to Watson Powell, Jr. Way.
Sec. 3. The City Council finds that this amendment will affect the following official plats, which are all the plats of land adjoining the portion of Keosauqua Was hereby renamed to Watson Powell, Jr. Way:
River Hills Plat 2
Second Street Place
Birds Addition
Van Buskirk Addition
The New Y.M.C.A. Plat
Alhambra No. 2
Grimmels Addition
C.H. Atkin's Subdivision
Chestnut Row
Sec. 4. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and publication as provided by law.
Sec. 5. The City Clerk is hereby authorized and directed to forward a certified copy of this ordinance to the Polk County Recorder, Polk County Auditor and Polk County Assessor. The City Clerk is hereby further authorized and directed to forward a copy of this ordinance to U.S. West Communications Company, Mid-America Energy, Des Moines Water Works, City Engineer, City Land Records Agent, Public Works-Street Department, Fire Department, U.S. Post Office-Address Programs Office, U.S. Post Office-Technical Sales and Services, Police Department-Research and Development Section, Board of Education, TCI Cablevision, the Public Works-Forestry Division, and the Community Development Department.
