ORDINANCE NO. 14,032

AN ORDINANCE renaming Valley Drive in the City of Des Moines, Iowa, west of Fleur Drive and north of Park Avenue, to George Flagg Parkway.

WHEREAS, George E. Flagg has served the citizens of the City of Des Moines as an At Large Council Member since he was first elected to the City Council in 1980; and,

WHEREAS, prior to his service on the City Council Mr. Flagg served upon the City Plan and Zoning Commission; and,

WHEREAS, the City Council desires to establish the George Flagg Parkway as a lasting tribute to Mr. Flagg's many years of faithful service to the citizens of this City; NOW THEREFORE,

BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of the City of Des Moines, Iowa:

Section 1. That the street within the City of Des Moines, Iowa, designated and known as "Valley Drive" and extending west from Fleur Drive to Park Avenue is hereby designated and shall hereafter be known as "George Flagg Parkway".

Sec. 2. That every reference in the Municipal Code of the City of Des Moines, Iowa, 2000, to Valley Drive shall be interpreted to refer to the George Flagg Parkway.

Sec. 3. The City Council finds that this amendment will affect the following official plats in Polk County, Iowa, which are the only official plats of land now directly adjoining George Flagg Parkway:

Valley Gardens, an Official Plat

Dearth Place, an Official Plat

Government Lots 7, 8 and 9 in the NE 1/4 of Sec 18-78-24

Sec. 4. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and publication as provided by law.

Sec. 5. The City Clerk is hereby authorized and directed to forward a certified copy of this ordinance to the Polk County Recorder, Polk County Auditor and Polk County Assessor. The City Clerk is hereby further authorized and directed to forward a copy of this ordinance to U.S. West Communications Company, Mid-America Energy, Des Moines Water Works, City Engineer, City Land Records Agent, Public Works-Street Department, Fire Department, U.S. Post Office-Address Programs Office, U.S. Post Office-Technical Sales and Services, Police Department-Research and Development Section, Board of Education, TCI Cablevision, the Public Works-Forestry Division, and the Community Development Department.
