ORDINANCE NO. 14,119

AN ORDINANCE renaming a portion of 1st Street and S.W. 1st Street between Walnut Street and S.E. 1st Street south of the Raccoon River to Water Street and S.W. Water Street.

WHEREAS, the original platted name of this portion of 1st Street and S.W. 1st Street was Water Street; and,

WHEREAS, the City Council desires to restore this portion of 1st Street to its original name of Water Street to assist in creating a unique identity for the adjoining properties and the redevelopment now occurring in the area; NOW THEREFORE,

BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of the City of Des Moines, Iowa:

Section 1. That the portion of the street within the City of Des Moines, Iowa, designated and known as 1st Street, extending between Walnut Street on the north and Vine Street on the south, is hereby redesignated and shall hereafter be known as "Water Street".

Sec. 2. That every reference in the Municipal Code of the City of Des Moines, Iowa, 2000, to 1st Street between Walnut Street and Vine Street shall be interpreted to refer to Water Street.

Sec. 3. That the portion of the street within the City of Des Moines, Iowa, designated and known as S.W. 1st Street, extending between Vine Street on the north and S.E. 1st Street on the south, is hereby redesignated and shall hereafter be known as "S.W. Water Street".

Sec. 4. That every reference in the Municipal Code of the City of Des Moines, Iowa, 2000, to S.W. 1st Street, extending between Vine Street on the north and S.E. 1st Street on the south, shall be interpreted to refer to S.W. Water Street.

Sec. 5. The City Council finds that this amendment will affect the following official plats in Polk County, Iowa, which are the only official plats of land now directly adjoining the portions of 1st Street and S.W. 1st Street hereby renamed to Water Street and S.W. Water Street:

Fort Des Moines, an Official Plat

South Fort Des Moines, an Official Plat

Factory Addition, an Official Plat

Official Plat of the West 1/2 of Sec. 10-78-24

Sec. 6. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and publication as provided by law.

Sec. 7. The City Clerk is hereby authorized and directed to forward a certified copy of this ordinance to the Polk County Recorder, Polk County Auditor and Polk County Assessor. The City Clerk is hereby further authorized and directed to forward a copy of this ordinance to U.S. West Communications Company, Mid-America Energy, Des Moines Water Works, City Engineer, City Land Records Agent, Public Works-Street Department, Fire Department, U.S. Post Office-Address Programs Office, U.S. Post Office-Technical Sales and Services, Police Department-Research and Development Section, Board of Education, Mediacom, the Public Works-Forestry Division, and the Community Development Department.
