CITIZEN
RESIDENTIAL TAX ABATEMENT MEETINGS

Here For Meeting Comments
The Des Moines City Council is reviewing
the City’s Residential Tax Abatement
Program and has requested that staff gather
citizen input.
The
Residential Tax Abatement program is utilized
across the entire city of Des Moines to
increase the development of new housing
and encourage the redevelopment or rehabilitation
of older homes.
Property
tax abatement reduces property taxes on
new improvements for a period of time. The
term of the abatement – 5 or 10 years
– depends on the property’s
location. The improvements must increase
the value of the property by at least 5%.
(The Polk County Assessor determines the
final valuation.)
Staff
has planned four Citizen Residential Tax
Abatement meetings to gather comments and
concerns from residents. The schedule of
meetings is listed below. Please review
the schedule and attend the meeting that
is most convenient for you. You may also
submit your comments regarding tax abatement
by completing the online Residential
Tax Abatement Comments Form.
